Did You Know You Are On Indigenous Land? At one time in history and in virtually every part of this continent, Indigenous people were the original stewards of the land. It has always been a long held custom in Tribal communities to open events and gatherings by acknowledging the traditional inhabitants of that land. In New Zealand, Australia and Canada, it is now become a policy. While some cultural and educational institutions in the United States have adopted this custom, the vast majority have not. The Oklahoma Indigenous Theatre Company recognizes the complicated history of Oklahoma and the implications of pre-statehood “Indian Territory.” We invite all Native people and Non-Native allies to make land acknowlegement a practice of respect at gatherings across Turtle Island. It is an important step to reversing the legacy of erasure of Indigenous peoples and brings honor to the history and living cultures to the original stewards of this land. There is a free guide of how to properly make a land acknowledgement. The guide is a free download from the USDAC website called, Honor Native Land: A Guide and Call to Acknowledgment
